Plans submitted for second phase of huge Salford mixed-use scheme

middlewood161006 An Anglo-Chinese joint venture has submitted detailed planning for the multi-million pound second phase of the mixed-use Middlewood Locks development in Salford.

Four new buildings will house 546 flats, offices and retail outlets, expected to be for private sale and rent.

The huge wasteland site between Chapel Street and Oldfield Road is centred around three basins of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal. The site was abandoned in 1961 and never redeveloped.

In March 2015 Salford City Council granted outline permission for the developer to go ahead with phase one which included up to 2,000 homes, retail stores and restaurants, as well as canal-side footpaths and cycle ways that will connect into Manchester city centre.

When complete in 2024, the scheme will also include a hotel, a gym and large office buildings.

Paul Kelly, Head of Development of Scarborough Group, which is part of the joint venture, said: “This is another step in creating a reality of our vision for Middlewood Locks.

“This development is providing much needed homes and quality office space capable of attracting major organisations, all in an environment that recognises people come first. Work on site is progressing rapidly; you will be able to see buildings start to go up by later this year with people and businesses moving in as early as 2018.”

Ian Lowson, Project Architect of WCEC Group, said: “Following phase one’s successful start on site our plans for phase two demonstrate further intent that Middlewood Locks, Salford, will be a world class neighbourhood. The proposals represent an extensive and rigorous design process involving true collaboration with all involved in this project.”
