This month’s cover story is the Hotel Brooklyn project, which will be linked via a footbridge to the adjacent Leicester Tigers rugby stadium. Approximately 750t of structural steelwork has been erected to form this six-storey hotel.

The former Granada Television Studios in Manchester are being redeveloped and one of the initial elements to be built is a 10-storey office building. Overall, the masterplan includes new build elements alongside the refurbishment of existing buildings to create a thriving area of homes, retail outlets and leisure facilities.

Also in Greater Manchester, steelwork is helping to form the University of Salford’s Science, Engineering and Environmental Building. This was originally going to be a concrete-framed structure, but after a value engineering exercise the framing solution was changed to steel, which reduced the cost of the scheme.

An exposed steel-framed design has given maximum flexibility to three office blocks for scientific research and innovation. Known as Project Violet, the buildings have been designed as landmark buildings that signpost the entrance to the Sci-Tech Daresbury campus near Runcorn.

Overlooking the River Thames at Chelsea, a signature steel roof structure has been erected as an architectural highlight of a 25-storey residential tower. Starting a level 20, the steelwork slopes upwards to form a peak approximately 7m above the building’s uppermost level.

NSC also features a sector focus on steel manufacturing equipment, industry news, a technical article and advisory desk from the Steel Construction Institute, and Codes and Standards updates.
