Leicester City reveal plans for stadium expansion

Premier League Leicester City Football Club plans to expand its King Power Stadium with 8,000 new seats in order to increase capacity to 40,000.

The club’s plans also include the construction of a 220-room hotel and a multi-purpose event and entertainment venue to be situated adjacent to the stadium. Proposals also include new retail zones, residential and commercial space, and car-parking facilities.

The club plans to submit a planning application for the new development to the local council this autumn, after its consultation with the public is completed at the start of September.

The increased capacity will be realised with the construction of a new and bigger East Stand, which will feature an illuminated diagrid roof structure.

Plans involve building the new stand while the rest of the stadium remains operational, thereby minimising any disruption to spectators.

Last year the club opened a new training ground in Charnwood, Leicestershire, that was delivered by McLaren. This state-of-the-art facility is on the shortlist for this year’s Structural Steel Design Awards (SSDA), with the winners announced in late September.

Subject to planning permission being granted, the club hopes construction work will start before the end of the 2022-23 season. The earliest anticipated date for completion is the third quarter of 2024.
