Governmental visit to British Steel headquarters

bshurd161208The Government’s Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Nick Hurd (pictured left) has toured British Steel’s Scunthorpe facility including the company’s Rail Service Centre.

He also held discussions with British Steel Director Paul Martin (pictured right) and representatives from the company’s new owners, Greybull Capital.

Nick Hurd said: “This government has been clear that we want to do all we can to secure a viable UK steel sector, so it was great to be in Scunthorpe today to meet British Steel and see for myself the progress the company has made in such a short period of time.

“This is further evidence that there really is a long-term sustainable future for steelmaking in this country and I look forward to working with British Steel moving forward.”

Mr Martin said: “We are in regular dialogue with the Government so it was an excellent opportunity for the minister to see exactly what makes our steel, our people and our industry so special.

“Since our launch on June 1 we have come a long way in a short space of time and while I am pleased to say we are on track to meet our financial targets, it is crucial that we continue to work with Government to ensure we have a sustainable future.

“Our industry still faces many challenges – most notably over energy pricing, business rates, R&D and public procurement. With Government support, I am confident British Steel can be a sustainable business and become the success story our employees are striving to make it.”
