Galvanized steel is just the ticket for London Underground

Posted on by in Weekly News

stairs160310South East Galvanizers (part of the Wedge Group) has supported a structural steel specialist with the creation of a complex new passenger staircase installed at a tube station in London.

The project saw the plant galvanize 16t of structural steel, which was used to create a double-flight staircase measuring 4m in width to replace an existing staircase.

The central London station’s staircase was in urgent need of repair and had failed its structural tests. With more than 2.7M commuters passing through the station last year, the new staircase formed part of an upgrade and improvement project to ensure safe access to the platform for passengers.

South East Galvanizers Commercial Manager Neil Pearson said: “The process involved a lot of work before the galvanizing process could even begin, with our team having to give considerable thought to how best they could be galvanized, taking into account the complex shape and size of the stairs. We worked out-of-hours to ensure that we would satisfy the client’s requirements and deadlines, and we were all very pleased with the result.”

The project’s client said: “Due to the size and scale, the project took over 20 weeks to complete, and it was decided in the early stages that we would galvanize the steel to protect the lifespan of the staircase.”
