Contractor named for Gateshead distribution hub

GMI Construction Group has been awarded the contract to construct up to 232,250m² of high bay distribution and industrial accommodation at a prime logistics site immediately south of the Follingsby Park industrial development in Gateshead.

Site infrastructure and enabling works on the development, which is to be known as Follingsby Max, have commenced with fully serviced plots available for development in early 2019.

Andy Bruce, Managing Director of GMI said: “Having commenced the infrastructure and enabling works this summer, we are delighted to have been awarded the construction contract for Follingsby Max. GMI have worked on a number of significant industrial and distribution projects throughout the North East and are very pleased to continue our work in the region.”

David Price, Operations Director of Highgrove Group said “This is the latest mega project that Highgrove have been involved in and we are delighted again to partner with GMI for the construction works on site. Having made an excellent start this summer we look forward to commencing development of the units early in the new year.”

The development is situated close to the A1M, A19 and directly off the A194(M) with good access to Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside.

Cllr Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council said: “The site serves as the North East’s stand-out logistics and distribution park and a much sought after and successful development. The announcement by Highgrove to develop the land immediately south of the existing development is fantastic news. It will play a key part in supporting the region’s economic growth strategy and cement its reputation as the premier distribution park in the North East.”
