Airport and investment boost for Aberdeen

aberdeen160204Details of a £20M redevelopment of Aberdeen International Airport, the largest since the facility opened nearly 40 years ago, are being set out.

The work will see the terminal grow by 50 per cent, while other improvements include bigger passenger and baggage areas, as well as new shops and restaurants. Much of the work is expected to involve steel construction.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who announced the plans in Aberdeen, said: “This investment by Aberdeen International Airport and its owners shows great ambitions and confidence in the airport’s future in preparing for projected growth.

“By increasing capacity and improving the passenger experience, the airport is making a clear statement.”

Despite the number of passengers at Aberdeen Airport dropping by 7% in 2015, last year was still the airport’s busiest year.

Last week, it was revealed that the north east of Scotland would receive more than £500M in combined funding from the UK and Scottish Governments.

The UK and Scottish governments each pledged £125M as part of the Aberdeen City Region Deal, while the Scottish Government separately promised another £254M for housing, roads and railways.
